What the Newhaven to Dieppe crossing is like
DFDS gives the crossing as around 4 hours, and 5 hours on certain overnight sailings, with up to six sailings a day between the two ports depending on the season. France is an hour ahead, so a morning departure lands in the early afternoon and the late-evening sailing arrives before dawn. On the night crossings a cabin is the difference between a restless few hours and actual rest.
Leaving Newhaven
Newhaven Ferry Port on Rail Approach is about 250 metres, or a three-minute walk, from Newhaven Town station, which makes this one of the easier Channel ports to reach by train. DFDS closes check-in 45 minutes before departure. Parking at the port cannot be pre-booked.
Arriving in Dieppe
You arrive on the Dieppe quays, within walking distance of the town but about 2 kilometres from the station. Drivers can join the roads towards Rouen and Paris quickly, while foot passengers should check the separate shuttle to the station, which DFDS does not operate.

Dogs aboard
Travelling with a dog on DFDS
Unlike DFDS’s North Sea route, dogs may stay in your vehicle on Newhaven–Dieppe, although you cannot stay in the car with them. DFDS also has a small number of pet-friendly cabins — four-bed sea-view cabins for up to two pets — and some kennels, which foot passengers travelling with a dog must book.
- Documents
- GOV.UK says pets living in England, Scotland or Wales need an animal health certificate from a vet to enter the EU, and cannot use a pet passport issued there. The certificate must be used to enter the EU within 10 days of issue.
- Rabies and microchip
- Microchip the dog before, or at the same time as, its rabies vaccination, then wait at least 21 full days after the first vaccination before travelling.
- Booking
- Add the pet to the booking and choose the car, a kennel or a pet-friendly cabin; DFDS charges a per-pet fee. Priority boarding is not available with a pet, and dogs must be at least 16 weeks old.
- On board
- Pets are not allowed in public areas apart from assistance dogs, and dogs must be on a lead. DFDS’s pet-cabin page mentions a dedicated outdoor area for dogs; food for pets is not provided.
