Wheelchair-accessible ferry cabins to France and Spain

Brittany Ferries sells wheelchair-accessible cabins on most of its ships, but only a few on each sailing, and they are easy to miss in the journey planner. This guide says which ships listed them when we checked, which single cabin is both accessible and pet-friendly, and how to be told when one comes on sale.

Ships

Which ships list accessible cabins

When we checked, Brittany Ferries’ journey planner listed wheelchair-accessible cabins with stock on nine ships: Armorique, Galicia, Salamanca, Santoña, Guillaume de Normandie, Mont St Michel, Pont-Aven, Saint-Malo and Commodore Clipper.

That is a list of what was on sale, not a deck plan. A ship can have accessible cabins that are sold out for the dates we scan, and the operator can change the ship on a route. The cabin shown on your own booking is the one that counts.

Routes

Where accessible cabins appear most

The same check found by far the most accessible-cabin sailings between Portsmouth and Caen: more than 500 in each direction over the months ahead. Portsmouth and St Malo followed with about 125 each way, then Portsmouth and Cherbourg and Plymouth and Roscoff with 50 to 60.

The Spain routes had the fewest: between 12 and 44 sailings per direction to or from Santander and Bilbao. Fewer sailings with a cabin means less choice of dates, which is where an alert earns its keep.

Accessible and pet-friendly: one cabin

Brittany’s planner marks exactly one cabin as both pet-friendly and wheelchair-accessible: the two-berth outside Club cabin with wheelchair access on Saint-Malo, the ship on the Portsmouth to St Malo route. It was the only cabin typed that way on any ship when we checked.

On the other ships the accessible cabins are not listed as pet-friendly. If you travel with a pet there, the pet needs its own arrangement. Confirm what applies to your sailing with Brittany Ferries before you book.

Booking

What Brittany Ferries asks you to do

Brittany Ferries asks disabled passengers to state their exact requirements at the time of booking and again at ticket check-in. It says it may have to limit the number of passengers needing individual assistance on each crossing, and that if it cannot carry you on a sailing it will try to offer an alternative sailing or refund the booking.

It also suggests that travelling with a companion who can assist may help during the voyage.
